Of all the portrayals of a major disaster that have appeared in the media, the one that I believe best depicts the dangers that we are all facing is a television ‘pre-enactment’ titled “After Armageddon”. As of this writing, this excellent video is available for viewing at no cost and...

It is no exaggeration at all to say that the global economy is in totally uncharted waters. Consider that throughout history nations have borrowed money, and paid interest, rather than being relegated to simply printing money. Today, however, governments have so over-extended themselves that they have trouble finding buyers for...

Many preppers are storing calcium hypochlorite because a small quantity of this chemical enables you to create enough bleach to purify a typical family’s drinking water for YEARS. The use of calcium hypochlorite also solves the problem posed by bleach losing it strength over time. Anyone choosing to store this...

There are those who would argue that the current world situation is simply part of some enormous, multi-decade social cycle that must occasionally play itself out. Such individuals may suggest, for example, that the US is currently going through the same cycle it previously experienced during the days between Presidents...

    Disinfecting with Bleach

The definition of the word ‘disinfect’ is “to clean something, especially by using a chemical substance, so as to kill all viruses, bacteria and other microbes”. As important as soap is in its critical role of maintaining personal hygiene, in a post-disaster scenario disinfecting surfaces (particularly those surfaces used for...

    Something Wicked this Way Comes

With a world economy in tatters, unstable global stock markets and an upcoming US presidential election it is impossible not to speculate about the future. There is so much chaos and instability throughout the world that any specific outcome is impossible to predict, however one thing that can be pretty...

    The Carrington Event

On September 1, 1859 a huge solar storm, which later came to be known as the “Carrington Event”, struck the Earth. The resulting electromagnetic pulse destroyed telegraph lines and equipment throughout the United States. It was said that sparks flew from some equipment, and some telegraph lines actually caught fire....

Many people, when confronted with the notion of preparing for a major disaster, simply shrug and reply that they have neither the time, the budget, nor the physical storage space to prepare for a disaster that may never materialize. However, while the development of a good plan does require time,...

In the aftermath of a major disaster that disrupts the economy there may still be opportunities for those who are properly positioned to make a living. Many of those opportunities will be oriented towards “fixing what is broken”. If civilization does not totally collapse then there will be a surge...

AUTHOR'S UPDATE: Since authoring and publishing WTINF in 2013 my life has been in upheaval. For 3 years after that I was in great pain and confined to crutches due to arthritis of the hips. This has kept me out of the preparedness mainstream in the intervening years.

However, since going to print I did research best bugout locations and have purchased and am refurbishing an ideal disaster homestead in rural, small town America. I also underwent hip replacement surgery which now has me living a pain- and crutch- free life, and I've even managed to step back out onto the tennis courts. :)

Life goes on ...

Today I look around and I see at least as much cause for concern as we had at the start of the financial collapse. I would urge anyone reading this to renew their resolve to prepare themselves and those they love to survive challenging times that very well may lay ahead.

I noticed that an impressive-looking book on personal disaster preparedness had reached the market a couple of weeks ago and ordered it so that I could check out the competition.

Finally I got around to checking it out - it had a pretty cover, and the author seemed to have some decent creds. Flipping through the pages I saw a lot of nice illustrations and thought... "This guy's a worthy competitor".

Then I look in the index to try researching a couple of common preparedness topics. I looked for the word "quarantine", and it did not appear.

I then looked for the word "gardening", and it directed me to a page that simply advised me to buy another book on gardening.

Based on this experience, and other similar experiences, I'm contemplating coming out with a second edition of WTINF. I'm also contemplating a major price increase to differentiate WTINF from such wannabes.

So, Deutsche Bank in Germany is apparently on the ropes, and they are 40x larger than Lehman. The collapse of Lehman brought about near collapse of 2008.

I suspect that the banks throughout the world are joined at the hip, and that when one sneezes all get the flu.

Disaster does not strike on our time table, and we need to be ready. The most important thing anyone can do to be ready for major disaster is to be more physically fit.

I will leave you with that important thought.

Yesterday I visited my favorite pawn shop in quest for a good fishing rig and, as I walked down the aisle, I was reminded of what I've come to consider to be one of the more important pieces of survival equipment.

You might be thinking of guns, knives or compasses, but the oft-not-considered item to which I am referring is the in-window air conditioner.

I'm a big fan of the concept of "buying oneself time to adapt" and, during an extended power outage in the hot summer months, an in-window A/C - coupled with a generator and a bit of fuel - can do exactly that. You cool down a single room for 1-2 hours each day and give your body some days to adapt to the new, harsher reality.

Of course much modern construction no longer permits the option of in-window A/C - something to ponder the next time you commission some home improvements.

At Staples I also happened onto another piece of oft-neglected, and very important survival gear, which is a Rand McNally road atlas of the entire US ($15). Once again, the importance cannot be overstated - last year's Hurricane season proved that amply enough. (It's really kinda difficult to find a place that sells printed road atlases these days, which is why I mentioned the name of the store.)

And for honorable mention I'll also highlight the importance of portable fuel containers to extend the range of your vehicle. Three 5-gallon containers can extend your emergency driving range by 175-300 miles! During Hurricane Irma last year I can testify that these things were sold out as far north as Valdosta, GA! They will NOT be there you you need them.
